I've been buying and selling them for a while & I don't know where you can look up the serial numbers, if at all. It would be very useful but on the other hand, if it were easily accessible, there's nothing to stop the determined faker from copying e.g. Ligne 2 models & using genuine corresponding serial numbers on them.
ST Dupont may have a record of all the lighters they've produced. Ligne 1, 2 and ' D ', Gatsby, Urban, models have hand-stamped serial numbers, not machined. They are irregular and not perfectly aligned.
First you need to identify which type of fuel cartridge you need. You can determine this by looking inside the cap you screwed off to expose the fill valve. The inside of the cap will be color coded red, gold, blue, or green. Use a Dupont refill cartridge of the corresponding color.
You can refuel a Dupont lighter using a steady hand and a regular butane cannister, but I don't recommend it. I broke the valve on one of mine that way after successfully refueling it for over a year. I was traveling a lot, and had a hard time finding Dupont fuel cartridges, so I got in the practice of using whatever butane I could find. Don't do this. Even if you've got practice at it, you'll probably break your lighter eventually and they're expensive to fix. There are metal screw-in adapters available, which will work just fine, too. Again, these are coded as to the type of lighter indicated by the color under the fill cap.
So, once you have either a metal adapter or a Dupont cartridge that fits your lighter, remove the fill cap, lightly press down on the valve stem to release any remaining gas and air which may have leaked in, and then firmly screw in either the gas cartridge or the adapter. If you're using a gas cartridge, simply let it sit until the cartridge is visibly empty, and then quickly unscrew the cartridge. The cartridges are single use, and your lighter is now refueled. If you're using an adapter, use a butane can with a cone shaped plastic sleeve over the valve stem, and press firmly against the hole in the adapter.
Fill until butane begins to leak around plastic sleeve, remove the butane can and quickly unscrew the adapter. Some people recommend freezing the lighter first, by placing it in the freezer for several minutes. The theory is that a cold lighter will allow a larger amount of fuel in before the pressure balances against the remainders in the cartridge. I haven't found this to actually give any benefit. If more fuel is successfully transferred to the lighter this way, it's a very small amount and doesn't make a significant difference. When refueling, it's also a good time to check your flint. Running a flint too short can result in pushing the flint ram against the striker and cutting a groove in the flint ram.
It'll still work after you've damaged the ram in that way, but it's a preventable bit of damage and really annoying should you accidentally do so.
Lovely lighter! There are a bevy of S.T Dupont lighter fakes out there. It seems the only true way to tell if one is a fake is the look of the Serial numbers. The numbers should not be aligned.
Each number is hand stamped separately. Somewhere I read that if one calls Dupont and give them the serial number, they will tell you if it is real or fake.
No one seems to know of an online site of Dupont serial numbers for dating purposes. From what I can see of your serial numbers, they don't look perfectly align and definitely not evenly spaced - the real deal. 'The only true way to know that I'm aware of is this: The serial number on a real Dupont lighter is hand stamped, number by number and so the numbers will not be perfectly aligned. That is, each number will be slightly out of line with the others (or at least some of them will be). Most fakes are machine made and so the numbers/letters are perfectly spaced and aligned as if done by machine.'

Line 2 lighters now retail for over $700, most $900 retail. If it NEW and cheap, its probably fake. If selling party calls it anything but 'ST Dupont' then its probably a fake lighter. Sellers do this to get around ebays keyword check. The Sound when the lighter is opened should be a pleasant lasting sound, in my experience the Ping sound dulls with use. The counterfeit ST Dupont makes an awful metallic 'cling' which differs greatly from a real ST Dupont ping sound.
Dupont Lighters Value
There is a screw holding a metal plate inside the top of the lid that can become loose. If you have a used ST Dupont its possible somebody has removed it to prevent it from ruining the sound of the lid when opened.
If you hear a rattling when lifting lid then it could be this plate coming loose. All you need is a small flat head screw driver to tighten it. Though be very careful not to scratch anything while you are in there. Also turn down the flame adjuster as much as possible before sticking your face directly over the butane valve.
